Zulu is correctly known as 'isiZulu'

facebook shareIt is one of a group of African languages spoken by Nguni people and the most widely spoken African Language in South Africa. IsiZulu is a true language, not a dialect.

isiZulu is also spoken by many other African ethnic groups and by many English and Afrikaans speaking South Africans.

Zulu and Xhosa are similar languages, and Zulu and Xhosa people can communicate with one another fairly well.

Tradition of the amaZulu

Historically the amaZulu were migrant cattle owners known to be brave, fearless warriors. This tradition is still celebrated with pride.

People invited as guests into a Zulu home are made to feel very welcome, and if trouble were to arise from outside his home a Zulu amadoda (man) would defend his guests with his life.

The amaZulu defeated and subjugated many other tribes, absorbing them into the Zulu nation. They were never subjugated by the British or the Boers and have retained their autonomy and culture to this day. The amaZulu have never been subservient to any other nation, but historically many other nations have been subservient to the amaZulu.

Although many Zulu people now live and work throughout South Africa, they consider the beautiful province of KwaZulu-Natal as their traditional homeland.
